Everyone was a little surprised when Marvel studios announced that for sure they were going to go up against Warner Bros’ Man of Steel 2 crossover movie featuring Batman. Because Captain America: The Winter Soldier has already surpassed WB’s The Lego Movie as the biggest opening of the year, it seems like a safe bet that Captain America 3 can take a shield-sized chunk out of Warner Bros’ megafranchise launch.
Bloomberg collected a series of panicked dick-measuring from the power players:
“It doesn’t make a lot of sense for two huge superhero films to open on the same date but there is a lot of time between now and 5/6/16,” Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros. in Burbank, California, said in an interview. “However at this time, we are not considering a change of date for ‘Batman vs. Superman.’”
“I don’t think the studios or the theaters would be happy to see this,” Alan Gould, an analyst at Evercore Partners LLC in New York, said in an interview. “I would be surprised if they didn’t end up changing these dates.”
“A lot of films are announced many years in advance now, and some of it is posturing,” said Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution for 21st Century Fox Inc.’s film division.
Hilarity, because Disney/Marvel is holding all the cards at the moment. If they’re ready to take the wind out of their own sails in Phase 3 by slamming up against their major competitor, the only outcome of that is Batman Vs. Superman losing millions of dollars by splitting the weekend. There’s going to be another movie featuring Captain America after 2016 and there’s going to be a Justice League after that too – which franchise would be most hurt from a face-off? Obviously the one that’s starting its story, not the one that’s concluding it.
